He Is Risen!

Easter is not about bunnies, eggs and chocolate. It’s about Jesus’ act of saving grace. On Easter we celebrate the day that Jesus rose from the dead! Sure, enjoy your Easter baskets with treats and gifts, but the ultimate Easter gift has already been given to us. He is risen!

Holy Week

The week that leads to Easter is when we remember the week that led to Jesus rising from the dead. Jesus was anointed with oil by a woman and entered into Jerusalem on a donkey. A few days later Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples. He was betrayed by one of His disciples and crucified the day after. He died and was buried in a tomb. Then, on the third day, Jesus rose from the dead just as He told the disciples He would. Hallelujah! He is risen!

“But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he[a] lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” (Matthew 28:5-7)

He Is Risen

Then, Jesus appeared to the disciples and gave them direction. “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[b] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

The work that was done on the cross changed everything. Jesus took on the wrath of God for sin that He never committed so that we wouldn’t have to. The sting of death is gone for His people. The chasm has been bridged between us and God. Jesus now reigns in heaven with the Father.

Our salvation is what we celebrate today, and we wouldn’t have it without Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. He was killed, buried, and then he rose from the dead. All of this was done to fulfill prophesies given by God years before.
